  6. 193.8 x 98.1cm.
  7.      Shen Chou was a native 
  8. of Ch'ang-chou, Kiangsu. His
  9. style name was Ch'i-nan; his
  10. sobriquets were Shih-t'ien 
  11. and  Pai-shih-weng. Shen 
  12. Chou is considered one of 
  13. the Four Great Masters of 
  14. the Ming dynasty.
  15.      "Lofty Mount Lu" was 
  16. completed in A.D. 1467.   
  17. This painting was a present 
  18. for his teacher Ch'en Kuan 
  19. on his seventieth birthday.
  20. The  mountains  and  rocks
  21. were first painted in light
  22. ink, and then, using heavier
  23. ink,  the artist  built  up 
  24. layer upon  layer  of  ink 
  25. strokes, finally giving an 
  26. extremely rich texture to 
  27. the surface.   His  brush 
  28. method as well as the dense
  29. type of  composition  are 
  30. reminiscent  of  the  Yuan 
  31. artist, Wang Meng.
